Rockin’ #50 70’s Style

A couple of weekends ago, we rocked it 70’s style for my mother’s 50th birthday. 50, you say? Yes, she is a youngster compared to most of my friend’s parents. She had me when she was 21. By the age of 28, she had 2 more children for a grand total of 3 girls. Why did she have the other two? I have no idea and question it myself sometimes. (Just kidding, I love my sisters! Well, most of time!)

Anyhoo, a couple of years ago Mama asked that for her 50th birthday, she wanted a disco party. Well, by George, she must have it! It was a small affair, really, only close family and friends. The great part about this is that only ½ the invitations made it due to the small Post Office that I mailed it from, I guessing. So, it was smaller than anticipated but everyone seemed to have a groovin’ time. We dressed up, got our pictures made by the famous Brook Hale photography, watched a slide show, played some 70’s trivia, and pretended we were wall flowers once it came time to dance. Some people waited after everyone left to dance, like good Baptists do! My dad built a dance floor for the party, but due to the torrential rains we received, I think I saw it floating down HWY 178!

(I'm fifty! Fifty years old. I can kick ... stretch ... and kick)

Oh, and the food, the food! If you have ever eaten at the Hale’s you know that there is enough food to basically feed Potts Camp. Dad cooked kabobs, smoked sausage, and hamburgers. Other items were made and brought with love that included baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, corn dip, rotel, fruit and dip, fruit salsa and cinnamon chips, homemade sin (it is so sinful to eat), and something called Captain Rodney’s something, something cheese bake that caused me to get up and walk in the morning due to eating on it for three days. I think you can get it at Oxford Floral. Anyways, everything was divine!

Here are some pictures of the decorations and the cake. Look at the young Lela! I love seeing that smile!

We made all of the decorations ourselves. Got the tissue paper flower idea from here, the paper flowers from here, and Brook designed the silhouettes with her students (no small children were harmed when making the silhouettes). The birthday banner was made to be on both sides. On the tables, we added small trivia cups packed full of 70’s music and TV shows. I think people really enjoyed this. We also asked the guests to dress up and bring/send a picture of their 70’s stylish selves.

We had a funkolicious and groovin' time!

  2. What a fun party! I had to laugh at the kick...stretch...kick thing. Love SNL! And the picture of Ken made me smile! He's such a good sport!
