Craft Night #6

My father was in the cabinet business for many years and often had left over cabinet doors. In college, my friends and I took these doors, painted them, and used stained glass to make them pretty. We even sold some pieces in an art gallery downtown. We called ourselves Designing Women II. Not only could we make you some cute wall decor, we could also quote any episode from the wonderful Designing Women series. My favorite is "The Night the Lights went out in Georgia." My favorite character was Suzanne Sugarbaker maybe because Delta Burke is a distant cousin. Any ways, we did mange to sell some cute pieces.

I needed something to go over the bed in the guest bedroom. I wanted it to be unique and cute. After digging through some stuff, I found a cabinet door that I had already glued blue stained glass pieces to. I just completed it and here is how I did it.

I bought scrap pieces of stained glass from a place that makes stained glass. I have several bags, so I just used coordinating blues.

Place the stained glass in the middle of the cabinet in a pattern that you like. Then you can glue it down. You can use hot glue, Gorilla Glue, or Welder's. Follow directions on the glue. Some will have to dry 24 hours.

Next, you could either paint the outer edges or wait until after you grout. I just like to play with color while the glue is drying.

Grout. Oh so fun! This is what takes the longest. I used this grout.

It is unsanded. If I did this project again, I would like to find sanded. The difference is that unsanded has no sand in it. Therefore it has a smoother texture. I just like the sanded because it is what I am used to, but I just could not find it!

Start at one end and keep moving until the end. Let it dry overnight. Repaint if necessary.

Clean the grout off the glass. You will have to do this several times.

Here is my beauty!

I like it, but I think I need some plates hanging around. That is just my southern ways, I guess. Maybe I have watched a little too much Designing Women!

  1. How creative are you!?! And can you ever watch TOO much Designing Women? I still laugh out loud at some of those episodes. I love your mosaic -- and plates around it would look cute too -- but it's perfect how it is too!
